Budgets

Has anyone else calculated their food costs, I did a quick tot up
Approx cost for Breakfast, lunch, dinner and some fruit for 3 people
  • £13.50 per day
  • £94.50 per week
  • £378 per month (4 weeks)
This does not include any wine, treats, toiletries, cleaning products and anything else you can think of.

I have a plan to budget our basic expenses, all the above and pet foods to £500 in a 4 week month on paper it should work, otherwise it feels we are just working to live.

Would be interested in anyone elses household management plans.

Have a good day.

  1. Curiously, I was trying to work out how much we (my wife and me - no children) spend on food just this weekend. We generally do a weekly Saturday shop for that week's food. This includes fruit & veg from a cheap green grocers, and (usually) cheese from an expensive deli and meat from an independent butcher, as well as butter and milk. I reckon that weekly shop generally comes to around £30 (less this week, more some weeks). Then there is the monthly supermarket shop for the storables (which is generally cat food and gin) and I think that comes out at around £120 a month. And, as I notoriously underestimate my expenditure, let's say that this all (weekly plus monthly shops) comes out at £70 a week for the two of us. Which is actually really close to what you are spending per person.

    1. I think we all under estimate our expenses, last month I calculated we spent £500 on usual living costs but it worked out to £600. Over the year we could have had a small holiday on that overspend. Oh and by the way we have some wine here we brewed last year and are yet to drink it but it's our first time of doing it so not expecting much.

    2. What flavour? My first few goes at wine were all quite good (apart from the rosehip). So, with any luck, it will be delicious.

I shall shortly be trying my dandelion wine, brewed last year. It is one I don't do very often because the results are often disappointing - but I am ever the optimist, so hope for great things.

  2. We have Peach, a carton grape juice one, a mixed fruit hotch potch, frozen grape, apple and lastly marrow. Our initial tasting has not been great but I was hoping a bit of time they might improve.

    1. First time I made peach it was horrible, so don't despair. I have never tried marrow, but if it is anything like the pumpkin I made don't invite me over for a glass. That was horrid too. The mixed fruit hotch potch should be good, and apple is often very good too. Keeping them for a while often improves the taste. I generally don't start drinking mine until a year has passed from picking the ingredients.
